3rd Annual Simi Valley Health and Fitness Challenge Winners:
Although some received big prizes Saturday at Simi Valley's Limon Latin Grill, everyone was a winner for being a loser - of weight, that is - in the third annual Health and Fitness Challenge put on by Melissa Collins of Simi Valley's Cardio Barre and Dr. Randa Cobey of Simi Valley's World of Wellness. Collins said 144 signed up, but only about 40 reached the finish line. The format was for teams of four to work together and go for a bi-weekly weigh-in. There were two optional seminars with recipes and helpful tips. "The win was based on a percentage of body weight," Collins said. "The biggest percentage of weight loss was 26.34 percent, so somebody lost one-fourth of their body weight. Seven people lost over 20 percent of their body weight. That's huge." Two teams were in a tight finish in the 13-week challenge, but Michelle Santa Cruz of Simi Valley was on the winning team and was the overall biggest loser, having lost 52 pounds and one-quarter of her body weight. She plans on using her prize money to take her father to Ecuador so she can meet her grandmother for the first time.
